Taiheiki (太平記) is a 1991 Japanese historical television series and the 29th NHK taiga drama. It is based on the 1958 novel Shihon Taiheiki by Eiji Yoshikawa.

I have been very slowly watching this drama, as my Japanese is still beginner level, and the show does not have subtitles. Still, I am very much enjoying it, and watching it has encouraged me to learn more Japanese history, so research and photo editing! WIN.

Like the other taiga dramas I have seen, both movies and series, NHK was very dedicated to accuracy, though of course, I do NOT claim to be an expert. The show is beautiful and also interesting and beautifully acted. Also, there were so many familiar faces from all the films and shows I’ve watched of Mr. Sanada’s, that it was very fun to see someone and say, “Oh my gosh, I recognize him/her from —-” For example, the actor portraying Ashikaga Takauji’s father is one of the main characters in the 1992 film Succession, starring Mr. Sanada!

Okay, enough babbling. Love this show. You can obtain copies of the entire series from Amazon Japan [that is where I got mine].

The song is オーバーチュア 〜 海賊様のお通りだ – It is Overture – The Passing of the Pirates – The opening music from The Big Adventure of the Fantastic Pirates [Starring Sonny Chiba, Hiroyuki Sanada, Etsuko Shiomi, and Hikaru Kurosaki, along with the rest of the Japan Action Club]
