Fumie Suguri 村主 章枝(JPN) – 2002 World Figure Skating Championships, Ladies’ Short Program
Nagano, JAPAN – 2002 World Figure Skating Championships, Ladies’ Short Program – Fumie Suguri of Japan placed 2nd in this skate to move up from a tie for 3rd to 2nd Place going into the Free Skate.
This was absolutely phenomenal, the kind of textbook skating you hope to achieve. She has done so many wonderful short programs in her career and this was Fumie at her very best. Fantastic.
And might I add, that there is no way whatsoever to justify a 5.3 for TM and a 5.5 for artistry. Everything she did was beautiful and flawless and I don't care if it means that judge put her in second or ninth. A 5.3 is totally inexcusable.
@Saphead You're probably right :-D. But that much room isn't necessary. There has to be some level of objective measure that says a routine is worth a certain mark, regardless of what other skaters do. If you look at it that way, 5.3 is far too low.

I love Lori Nichol's choreography and the way Fumie made it work.
I think this was the most complimentary I've ever heard Dick Button toward Fumie. Really one of the most beautiful SP performances.
@intldawn I think the Russian judge wanted to be sure to leave a lot of room for Irina. :oP
